NFC with Hotels

Hi There,

I would like to know if we can add NFC tags with the existing systems in the hotels which are currently using the rfid technology?

Yes it is possible with/without changing exisiting reader/door lock infrastructure.

NXP products such as MIFARE DESFire Light, MIFARE DESFire EV3 allows you to configure them as a type 4 NFC tag. on top of that, access credentials can be stored in seperate file/memory.

Interesting. So even if there is a hotel who has a 6 years old technology?

What keep changing over years is the security mechanisms and contactless performance and application capabilities.

if you would like to implement state of art crypto and secure messaging mechanisms, you may need to upgrade or replace the existing infrastructure.

on the other hand, contactless IC products are developed in a such a manner that allow easy migration. which means, you issue the cards that are compatible to both existing (old) and future (new) infrastructure.. which will allow you to smoothly migrate or upgrade your solutions.

adding a NFC Tag functionality doesnt require a big update unless you want to use the NFC type 4 Forum Tags which comes with additional crypto capabilities.

So Mifare is one that you recommend to go if we want to implement without any changes in the system rite?

How would these nfc integrate with the systems? Is it through a specific card reader?

Yes, correct.

basically, you are adding NFC/NDEF Functionality to your card inorder for hotel key cards to be interacting with mobile Phone. for example, the hotel key card can be personalized with a wifi password. so, the users just tap on the card to get connected to wifi or the NDEF contain a link to your hotel portal through which you can get access to all services.

There is no seperate reader required for addition of NDEF/NFC.
